International (Europe/Japan/Southern Hemisphere) Tohoku (Japan) - 2020 Trip Report

Feb 1st – Travel to Aomori and Start of Tohoku Trip We were on the road by 9am to head to the Shin-Hakodate train station to take the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Shin-Aomori in Tohoku, the far northern tip of Honshu. We had to return the van to the Nippon Rent-a-Car next to the station first...

    International (Europe/Japan/Southern Hemisphere) Hakuba 2020

Tomorrow, I’m off to Japan after taking care of business in China. A few more meetings in Tokyo and Osaka (amazing one can travel by train for a day trip between these two cities), then Hakuba. This trip was originally planned with both Hakuba and Myoko. But forecasted weather has caused me to...

Buying First Skis / Going to Japan

Hi Everyone! I've been overwhelmed with choice so I made an account here to hopefully get some thoughts from the community though I know there is no 'perfect answer'. I'm a 5'11" / ~150 lbs male, fairly advanced skier. I have skied mostly in Utah. I can ski all parts of the mountain but don't...

"Foreigner and skiing pals get lost in Japan, call cops for help, ignore them when they call back"

That's the headline. A friend currently visiting Japan sent me this article. ... I guess it's Backcountry since they wandered outside of the resort? https://soranews24.com/2019/01/25/foreign-skier-gets-lost-in-japan-calls-cops-for-help-then-ignores-them-when-they-call-back/

International (Europe/Japan/Southern Hemisphere) Drowning in Japow

Drowning in Japow. We hope so. Of course there's a downside to that... Travel is always hard. It's MLK weekend and the TSA isn't getting paid. Airport horror stories are all over the news. So we get to the airport 3 hours early. No lines and friendly TSA. We kill the time walking the terminal...

International (Europe/Japan/Southern Hemisphere) Anyone checked skis on Japan Airlines?

I will be traveling to Japan on JAL this winter. It looks like they don’t make any allowances for checking skis. There is a $200 fee to check a bag that is greater than 203cm overall dimension, which pretty much includes any roller bag. If anyone has travelled on JAL with skis how did you handle it?
